The rabbit, imprisoned in a hollow tree, induces his guard to look up at him. He spits tobacco juice into the guard's eyes and blinds the guard, and thus effects his escape.
The crane pulls a bone from the wolf's windpipe. When he asks for payment the wolf says, "That you were allowed to take your beak from my throat is payment enough."
The wolf hurts his paw. The raven wants to peck out the wolf's eyes. The wolf catches the raven and is about to eat him. The raven promises to heal the wolf's paw, if he is set free. He does so.
The mill speaks to the wolf. To the lazy wolf the mill seems to say: »It is good to live in Riga.» The wolf sets out for Riga. Now he hears the mill say: »It is the same there as here» — and returns.
The wolf dominates the hare. The wolf orders the hare to dress himself, to put on boots, to get a coat made, to buy a cap and to feed the wolf. The hare gets nothing. He hatches a young hare out of an egg. The wolf devours them both.
Badger: »I was a hundred years old when grama grass first grew. »Crane: »My daughter was a hundred years old when grama grass first grew.» Wolf: »I am only eight years old, but we shall see who gets the beehive.»
The wolf catches the squirrel and asks him why he is always so gay. The squirrel begs to be set free before answering the question. He climbs up a tree and says that the wolf cannot be gay because of his wicked heart.
