The deceased friend followed into the other world. Cf. Type 471.
I. The Visit to the Other World. (a) Two friends pledge themselves never to part. One of them dies. (b) The living friend invites the dead to visit him on Christmas and goes with him when he returns; or (c) a man in a churchyard invites a skull to dinner and then goes off with the skull.
II. The Journey. (a) On the way they see many strange sights; among them: (b) fat and lean kine; (c) a broad and narrow road; (d) people and things that strike one another. (e) The living goes to sleep by a water; when he wakes he is covered with moss. (f) They see houses of feast and of mourning.
III. The Return. (a) When the living man returns he has been away many centuries; all is changed and he knows no one.
IV. Death. (a) He dies the next day by falling from a tree (or high place). (b) He vanishes after prayer.
