She digs herself out: serves at the king's castle. Takes the place of the bride at the wedding. The conversation with the horse, the bridge, the churchdoor.
I. Imprisoned Princess. Because of her faithfulness to her betrothed, a princess along with her maid is confined by her father in an underground prison.
II. Escape and Service. (a) After many years she escapes and takes service in the king's castle. (b) The fiancee of her lover, because she wishes to conceal her pregnancy or because of her hideousness, forces the heroine to take her place at the wedding.
III. The Substituted Bride. (a) On the way to the church she talks to her horse, to the bridge, and to the churchdoor and thus reminds the prince of his first love. (b) He gives her a necklace after the wedding.
IV. Recognition. (a) When the bride, again in her own clothes, comes to the prince in the evening she cannot recall the conversation on the way to the church and must always consult with the maid. (b) When he wants to see the necklace, the truth comes to light. (c) He drives her away and keeps his faithful sweetheart.
