I. The Fool and the Prophet. (a) A passerby tells a fool who is sitting on a tree limb and sawing the limb that he will fall. When the fool falls, he believes the passerby to be a prophet. See Type 1240. (b) The fool demands that the »prophet» or a fortuneteller tell him when he will die.
II. The Death Prophecy. He is told he will die (a) when a red thread or the like comes from his body, (b) when his hands and feat become cold, (c) when a drop of water falls on his head, or (d) other signs.
III. The »Dead» Man. The prophesied event occurs and the fool thinks he is dead. (a) When his pall-bearers or passersby argue over which road to take, the fool sits up and advises them: When I was alive, I took such a one.» (b) He is beaten by the soldiers, etc., and returns home to warn his friends to avoid soldiers in the afterworld, etc.
