Peik with his fooling-sticks.
I. Deceptions as a Trade. Brother and sister live together but are poor and Peik goes out to make a living by fooling people [K301]. See Type 1525A.
II. Animal Bargains. (a) He gets the king's horse by borrowing it to ride home for his fooling sticks; see Type 1525B (K341.8.1]; (b) he sells the king a wolf to guard the fowls [K133.1] and a bear to guard the cows (K133.2]. Cf. Type 1539.
III. Pseudo-Magic Objects. The king is fooled into buying a self-cooking kettle and the staff it hangs on. Cf. Type 1539. [K112.1].
IV. Sham Murder. The boy feigns killing and resuscitating his sister with a magic pipe [K113]; the king tries it with fatal results [J2401]. Cf Type 1535 IV b.
V. Companion to the Princess. Peik in his sister's clothing is taken to the palace as companion to the princess. A prince comes as a suitor to Peik, who escapes. The princess is with child. [K1321.1].
VI. Substitute Receives Punishment. (a) Peik is caught, put in a cask, and exchanges place with a shepherd [K842]; cf. Types 1535 V a, 1737; (b) Peik is to be hanged but changes with a miller [K841]; cf. Type 1538. (c) The king forgives Peik and takes him as son-in-law [L161].
