The Devil on the Ship (previously The Ogre on the Ship). (Including the previous Type 1179*.) A man (sailor) saves his soul (himself) from the devil (ogre) because the latter does not accomplish a difficult task. This tale exists chiefly in two different forms:
(1) The devil is unable to pump the whole sea out of a leaky ship [H1023.5].
(2) The devil is unable to hold a ship fast on its anchor chain. (Previously Type 1179*.)
