- "Purchase not him who Surpasseth thee"

Een sprookje (),

Beschrijving

A widow sends her son to learn a craft, but he learns to play cards and the violin. In order to get back the money she has spent on him she sells her son at the market; he is bought by a dealer in spite of all he tells him: »Purchase not him who surpasseth thee» or »whoever purchaseth me will rue it.» The dealer gives him a letter and sends him to his house as a slave. On the way he saves the ship's master from debt as the latter was losing at cards, and alters the letter to »the dealer's soninlaw» (as in Type 930). By his violinplaying he gains the friendship of the king's son who issues a decree: none shall discharge arms. The dealer arriving by ship discharges a cannon; his soninlaw procures his delivery from the gallows with three empty nutshells.
